Thai Studies Seminar Series, Semester 2/2025

PBIC Thai Studies, Pridi Banomyong International College, organized a seminar entitled “Rule of Form: An Example of the Normalization of Exceptions in Thailand’s Justice System” on Monday, 12 January 2026, from 1:00–3:00 PM.

The seminar featured Professor Emeritus Dr. Thongchai Winichakul, Visiting Professor at Pridi Banomyong International College and one of Thailand’s most influential historians, as the speaker. The event was organized under the Thai Studies Program, led by Ajarn Warachaya Liaotianchai (Ajarn Som).
In his talk, Dr. Thongchai examined how legal “exceptions” have become normalized practices within Thailand’s justice system. Using the case of ankle shackles imposed on male prisoners when appearing in court, he demonstrated how a practice explicitly prohibited by law has nonetheless become routine—so routine that standardized forms are filled out without deliberation or judicial discretion. These shackles have effectively become a form of “modern restraints,” illustrating how legal exceptions are institutionalized and rendered invisible in everyday judicial procedures.
The seminar drew strong interest from faculty members, students, and members of the public, and provided a space for critical discussion on structural problems within Thailand’s legal and justice system, including practices within the courtroom itself.

PBIC Thammasat ได้ร่วมเป็นวิทยากรจิตอาสาใน “โครงการอบรมภาษาต่างประเทศ (ภาษาฝรั่งเศส ภาษาอังกฤษ และภาษาจีน) ประจำปี 2568” ระหว่างวันที่ 4 เมษายน – 31 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2568 จัดโดย สมาคมครูภาษาฝรั่งเศสแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระราชูปถัมภ์ ฯ ร่วมกับ วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม ราชวรมหาวิหาร นำโดย ผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์ ดร. กำพล ปิยะศิริกุล (หัวหน้าโครงการจีนศึกษา) อาจารย์ Ni Yating (อาจารย์อาสาสมัคร) อาจารย์ Li Hongfei (อาจารย์พิเศษ) และนักศึกษาสาขาวิชาจีนศึกษา ชั้นปีที่ 2 นางสาวเมธาวี รัตนไชย เข้าร่วมโครงการในครั้งนี้ ซึ่งผู้เข้าร่วมได้รับเกียรติบัตรและได้รับเชิญเฝ้ารับเสด็จฯ และรับพระราชทานของที่ระลึกจากสมเด็จพระกนิษฐาธิราชเจ้า กรมสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ในวันที่ 30 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2568 ณ โรงเรียนอัสสัมชัญ เขตบางรัก กรุงเทพฯ

PBIC brought students from Guangxi University to Kong Khong Market to experience authentic Thai local life as part of the Thai Language for Tourism course taught by Ajarn Thitipong Duangkong. Upon arrival, the students received a warm and heartfelt welcome from the local community, creating a friendly atmosphere that made their cultural learning even more meaningful.
At the market, students enjoyed a traditional Thai-style breakfast and experienced the charm of a local Thai coffee corner (Sapha Kafae)—a social hub where community members gather to chat and share stories. This provided students with a unique opportunity to observe Thai morning culture while practicing simple Thai conversations with vendors and local residents. They also created travel vlogs to enhance creativity and gain confidence in using Thai in real-life situations.
The group later joined a hands-on workshop making iconic Thai desserts, including Foi Thong and Ayutthaya Roti Sai Mai. Under Ajarn Thitipong’s guidance, students learned the cultural stories behind the sweets, tried making them, and tasted their own creations—an exciting and memorable experience.
To complete the cultural journey, students also participated in a Thai fan painting activity, which allowed them to express their creativity while learning about traditional Thai arts and crafts. The activity not only sparked imagination but also strengthened their understanding and appreciation of Thai culture.

PBIC Takes Guangxi University Students on a Marine Geography Study Trip in Chonburi! 🌊✨
Pridi Banomyong International College (PBIC) organized an educational trip for students from Guangxi University, People’s Republic of China, to Chonburi Province. Today’s activity focused on exploring the geography of Thailand’s eastern coast, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chaiwat Meesanthan, Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies, Thammasat University.
The group enjoyed a snorkeling trip at Koh Samaesan, Sattahip, where they admired the island’s crystal-clear waters and beautiful coral reefs. The students were all smiles, having fun swimming and learning about Thailand’s coastal geography and marine ecosystems. 🫧🌴☀
